In every industry, there must be a group of outstanding people who are fuelling innovation. They are pushing the industry forward step by step, and the design industry is no exception. The “40 UNDER 40” design award, that was once known as “the top list of Chinese young design leaders”, is a platform for them. Here, a number of outstanding designers from all over the country have gathered. They have stood at the centre of the design industry stage and become the backbone of the industry’s transformation and development at the golden age of under 40.
Roca, a century-old classic international brand, is a global leader in the field of sanitary products. It sets industry benchmarks with design, technology and sustainable development. During the award launching event, guests had a chance to get familiar with Roca’s high-end customized products under the Armani / Roca brand. Designed by famous Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani and Roca, they define “elegance”, “gentleness” and “exquisiteness” in the sanitary field.

In recent years, young and senior designers in Northeast China, including Shenyang and surrounding areas, have grown a lot. They are getting closer and closer to domestic first-tier cities and international design stage. It is truly inspiring and motivating. Thanks to F&M Media, 40 Under 40 Design Award and Armani/Roca for providing such opportunities, I also hope that there will be more such opportunities for young designers in Shenyang to show themselves and bring their works to the country and even international level.
40 UNDER 40 Design Award China (2020-2021), is open for young designers who are from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and are under 40 years old. They have to have an outstanding track record and professional achievements in the field of interior and architectural design.
Fashion is people’s admiration for something for a while; entertainment brings you the feeling of joy. But what is the relationship between fashion and design? From American fashion designer Virgil Abloh, Moschino’s creative director Jeremy Scott, to Dutch design genius Marcel Wanders, three designers from different fields use creative design to express their views on fashion design, product design and interior design. We get our inspiration from fabrics, lighting, and new technologies to make attractive and functional projects that also follow their primary function.

Jingle design works on two levels: macro and micro, to carry out the project. How to find the big in a small project? The answer is to create a large scene in a tiny space. For example, the project site is a narrow, long and deep space. We turned its defects into its speciality by transforming the room into a “cave.”
The Lugu Lake Resort Hotel project started from a broader macro perspective. We cut off all of the decoration and instead used 360-degree lakes and mountains as the background colour, and you can see the mountains and lakes when you look up. By doing so, we created a timeless project that compliments the surroundings instead of interrupting them.
The environment determines the design language. In the pursuit of self-realization, time changes people’s perceptions. Designers need to find their path of growth. Why are some buildings still standing after many years? The answer is relatively simple: the attributes of the project are correct, and it functions reasonably well. In the design process, it is particularly important to combine local culture characteristics and natural surroundings.

Zhang Ziqian shared his interpretation of sustainable design, explaining the relationship between people and cities, and interaction between people and spaces. From the urban development path of rural towns and glorious megapolises.
On my growth path as a designer, I have gained some experience, and I have a few thoughts that I would like to share with you. Designers at each point of their career have characteristics specific to that point. Young people must find goals and clarify the direction of their effort on their way up. In the era when new design power and traditional old school designers coexist, the competition is fierce. So get out of your comfort zone, go on a study tour, find that circle of yours. Success never comes easily.
